Naintal has earned an appellation of “Lake district of India” due to its pastoral lakes, which will surely spellbound you with their breathtaking beauty. This lovely hill station of India is situated in the Nainital district in the Kumaon foothills of Uttarakhand. Once, this picturesque place confined amidst the splendid beauty of the “Mother Nature”, was dotted with sixty tranquil lakes. Most of these lakes are vanished now, only the glimpse of those earlier days are remained. But the Naini lake is still existing with all its charm. It is situated at an altitude of 1,938 m above sea level, bounded by three mountains from three sides namely Naina(2615m) from the north, Deopatha(2,438 m) from the west and Ayarpatha(2,278 m) from the south. Nainital which is famous for its varied topography, was discovered by Lord Baron in the year 1841. Due to its cool and pleasant ambiance and eye catching beauty, Nainital was turned into the summer capital of the United province in the British era. So, one can easily witness the glimpse of British colonialism in the various monuments of Nainital.
This small hill station has an endless array of tourist attractions. The prominent attraction of Nainital is the Naini lake, which is believed to be one of the 64 Shakti peeths or religious sites where the body parts of Sati(wife of Lord Shiva) fell on earth while being carried by Lord Shiva. According to a legend Sati's eyes(nain) fell on this place due to which it is called as Nain-tal (lake of the eye). And a temple dedicated to goddess Sati was built on the north shore of the Naini lake. This sacred temple is called as Naini devi temple. Every year in the month of September a fair is organized which is dedicated to Naina devi. During this traditional fair the entire town is decorated like a bride.
Other major attractions of Nainital are the Church of St. John, Gurney House, and some high mountain peaks like Tiffin top(Dorothy's seat) situated at an altitude of 2,292 m on Ayarpatta hill, Naina peak (China peak), the highest peak in the town which provides fantastic view of both the Himalayas and the Nainital town and last but not the least Snow view, situated at an altitude of 2, 270 m gives spectacular view of snowbound Himalayas and Nanda devi, Trishul and Nandakot. Nainital town is also surrounded by many marvelous places like Jim Corbett National Park, Bhimtal lake, Khurpa tal, Naukuchia tal, Sattal, Hanumangarh and Mukteshwar town.
Due to so many attractive spots this place is always brimming with both international and national tourists throughout the year, mostly during the Winter festival and other traditional singing and dancing programmes.
